4. Do I need a referral?

No, Hawaii became the 46th state to allow "direct access" to PT service in January

2011, allowing individuals to see their physical therapist without obtaining a doctors referral, however, your insurance provider may require a doctors referral as condition of payment.

Contact your insurance provider for details.

5. What is "direct access"?

In order to save valuable time and healthcare dollars, most states have for many years allowed patients to go directly to their physical therapist for musculoskeletal dysfunction or injury without having to first pay a visit to their doctor.

Hawaii's very few insurance companies have not yet embraced this 2011 legislation and continue to require a doctors referral as condition of payment.

If you would like to use "direct access" contact your insurance provider and request it.

6. What should I wear when I come to physical therapy?

Wear loose comfortable clothing that will allow the therapist to easily visualize and access the body area to be treated.
